How To Learn More Outside Of Class Than You Ever Could Inside It

How To Learn More Outside Of Class Than You Ever Could Inside It

I’m going to give you a list of seemingly random things, and I want to you try and guess how they’re related. Ready? Here we go:

  1. Automatic Reference Counting (ARC) is a feature in iOS 5 that allows the compiler to do memory management automatically, so you don’t have to.
  2. Out of all high school students that graduate in the bottom 40 percent of their class, 76 percent will not will not have a college degree within eight years.
  3. しんぶんでしたか? いいえ、しんぶんじゃりません。いちごでした。

Give up? I know, I know – these things seem totally random. And to you, they absolutely are. There’s nothing that concretely binds them. So what’s the relation?

Simple – they’re all things I learned yesterday.

And here’s another thing: I didn’t learn any of this stuff in a classroom (even though I’m a college student). That’s right – I learned it all on my own. And every single day of the (work)week, I learn more and more new things out of class. In fact, this semester I’m:

  • Learning Japanese
  • Building an iPhone app from scratch
  • Reading at least one book per month

This is on top of my regular class load and the work I do to run College Info Geek (which is considerable). And guess what? You can do this as well.

In this post, I’m going to show you the techniques I use to educate myself without any sort of formal structure, classrooms, professors, or tuition fees. Read More →

5 Things You Can Do Today To Make Yourself 2 Billion Percent More Hireable

5 Things You Can Do Today To Make Yourself 2 Billion Percent More Hireable

Outlandish claim time: This post will make you a million dollars and will make your life 600 times better. Yup - I even sent my friend Chris to the future to verify this and he said I was totally right.

Okay, maybe that’s not true. But. I will say that this post does have the potential to get you closer to those two things.

This post is about making yourself the most irresistible candidate possible for any internship or job you might be going for. It’s about standing out from the crowd and being impossible to overlook.

Think about it: you might be incredibly freaking awesome at whatever it is you’re studying. You might be a badass programmer, or know the details of every court case since 1894, or have a ton of experience in forensic accounting. You know that you’d kick ass doing the job you want – but the problem is that other people aren’t so aware of that talent.

That’s why you can’t rely on your talent and raw experience alone to stand out. Other factors count, and they count a lot.

In this post, I’ll detail not 2, not 87, but 5 things you can do (or at least begin) today that will help you to become an irresistible hire. Remember, the key here is doing them - just reading over this post won’t get you anywhere. Challenge yourself to actually do a few of them now. Read More →

The Ultimate Guide To Building A Personal Website

The Ultimate Guide To Building A Personal Website

This guide was originally published in March 2012. Since then, hundreds of students (and even non-students!) have created their own personal websites using it. As it is one of the most-viewed articles on College Info Geek, I keep this guide very up-to-date.

What’s the #1 networking tool you can have in your arsenal as a student? I’ll tell you this right now: it isn’t your resume.

Resumes are boring. Career experts tell you to make your resume a one-page, size 11 Time New Roman document printed with black ink with no pictures. Seriously? How are you supposed to represent – and differentiate - yourself with that?

Plus, your resume becomes static and outdated the moment you hand it to someone. You can’t update resumes you’ve already given out – you have to make new copies.

That’s why you need a personal website.

A website is the complete opposite of a resume. Everything bad about resumes can be fixed simply by having a website. I’d go as far as to say that not having a website is like shooting yourself in the foot – it’s that useful. Read More →

37 Awesome Streaming Music Sites You Should Check Out

Note: Yo! I’m in the process of majorly updating this post. If you see entries without text, fear not – they’ll be filled out very soon. Thanks!

“Dude, you gotta hear this!” This is an often-used statement around here, and I’m usually the one saying it. I’ve been saying it for years. Indeed, my insatiable appetite for discovering new music goes back to my days as a teenager, back when I was rocking a giant CD player shoved in my hoodie pocket. Back then we had no streaming music; the only way to share music with my friends was to physically take the CD over to wherever they were and put it in a stereo. Man, how times have changed. First, we got downloadable MP3′s – we could simply tell a friend to check something out on iTunes, CD Baby, Rhapsody, or whatever. Now, however, it’s an entirely different ball game.

Streaming music websites have revolutionized the way we acquire and listen to our tunes. Read More →

How To Build The Ultimate Hanging Loft Bed

How To Build The Ultimate Hanging Loft Bed

Back in May, I put up a cool little tutorial on how to build a hanging desk. Basically, I attached chains to the four corners of a sturdy board and hung the board off my loft bed. While it was a pretty simple project, the outcome was pretty cool – all the floor space that would be taken by desk legs is freed up, giving me more room to store things or to stretch out my legs.

Unfortunately, I’m back in school and the standard desk that comes with my room cannot be removed. Therefore, I had to go looking for other ways to free up floor space. Gotta make room for a couch, right? Read More →

Study Music Feature: 50 Killer Album Interludes

Most people consider me to be a metalhead – that is to say, I spend most of my music-listening time pumping post-hardcore and metal bands through my ears. Bands like Memphis May Fire, Underoath, Outline in Color, As I Lay Dying, and Protest the Hero are staples of my musical diet. However, I am not a metalhead by any means, as my taste extends widely to realms untouched by most people and is as diverse as the colors in a McDonald’s ball pit. Case in point – on any given day I might go from Janelle Monae to Looptroop, and then switch over to Fleet Foxes just for a change.

However, it must be said that I do still listen to lots of rock and metal. One thing I’ve noticed about this particular style of music is that it is a breeding ground for interludes. Read More →

How To Build A Hanging Desk In 15 Minutes

How To Build A Hanging Desk In 15 Minutes

My dorm-design philosophy is this: things that touch the floor are bad. Now, while that’s not to say you should attempt to create a Swiss Family Robinson-style treehouse in your room, it’s pretty easy to agree that anything that sits on the floor takes up valuable space that could be used for yoga, stationary cycling, or counting laundered money. Therefore, things like combination refrigerator-microwaves and stackable containers are a godsend to the college student who’s been forced to get in touch with his inner sardine. Read More →
